Standard Excess
The excess is the amount you have to pay towards the cost of a claim and is deducted from the amount you will be paid out by the insurer.
For example, if you had to cancel your holiday due to illness and the cost of your holiday was £1000, if your policy has a £250 excess you would receive £750 back from your insurer, provided you had £1000 or more cancellation cover.
The excess payable on Medical, Personal Liability and Legal Expenses claims may be higher and some sections of the policy have no excess. Your policy schedule will show the excess payable on each section of your policy.
Excess on Personal Money:
The excess on the personal money section of the policy works slightly differently.
In this instance the excess is the minimum amount you need to have lost before you are eligible to make a claim.
With an excess of £200, you must have lost over £200 to be eligible to submit a claim. You will then be able to claim for the amount you have lost over £200, up to the limit stated in your policy schedule.
For example, where the limit for Personal Money is £100 and the excess is £200, if you have lost £250, you will be eligible to make a claim for £50. If you have lost £300 you will be able to make a claim for £100. If you have lost £400, you will be able to make a claim for £100.
